Breeding for Pedigree and Commercial Markets
Strathbogie Texels was founded in 2000 with the purchase of two in-lamb Gimmers from Baltier Flock, bought at Lanark and two further gimmers bought privately from Muiresk and Glenside Flocks. The flock then added Baltier Imp as their first ram purchase when he made £10,000gns at Carlisle in 2002. Since then the family have regularly presented quality animals for sale and show with the emphasis being on character and conformation.
The highest price sale in the flock so far is 24,000gns for Strathbogie Smokey Blue a son of the 201- Sire of the Year, Glenside Razzle Dazzle out of a dam by Castlecairn Kung Foo Fighter. Smokey Blue goes back to Strathbogie Panther and Millers Outstanding on his sire side and to one of the original Glenside Gimmers on his dam side. 2011 also saw the flock take the third top average in the UK for gimmers when they averaged £3112 for 11.
Strathbogie British Blues was founded in 2004 with the purchase of Lukeroyal Tara from M.J. Lucas from Northern Ireland. With the purchase of the 17,000gns Netherhall Buster at Carlisle in 2008, the herd has gone from strength to strength with a Buster son, Strathbogie Elliot selling to the top price of 7,700gns in Carlisle in January 2012 and a heifer by the same sire being sold at the Carlisle Spring Sale in 2012 for 5,000gns. At the same sale the herd bought a half share in the 15,000gns Champion on the day Bedgebury Flat Out. Like the Texels, the Blues have been chosen for their power and presence to suit the pedigree and commercial markets.
